The SU-100 was developed in 1944 as an improvement over the SU-85 and used the same chassis as the T-34-85. It received the powerful 100 mm D-10S gun and increased frontal armour of 75 mm. During testing, the gun could penetrate 125 mm of vertical armour at 2,000 metres and the German Panther's sloped 85 mm frontal armour at 1,500 metres. An improved commander's position with cupola and two ventilation units provided further improvements over the SU-85. Mass production began in September 1944 and continued until 1946.

Powered by a W-2-34 diesel engine producing up to 500 hp, with a combat weight of up to 31.6 tonnes and substantially increased firepower, the SU-100 served on the Eastern Front and remained in use after World War II. Vehicles were used by the Polish People's Army and exported to countries including Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Romania.
