HMS Hood was the only completed ship of the Admiral class and entered Royal Navy service in May 1920. At 262 metres long and with a full displacement of 48,400 tons, Hood was for many years the largest warship in the world during the interwar period. Her main armament consisted of eight 381 mm guns in four twin turrets, supported by 102 mm guns, 40 mm anti-aircraft weapons and torpedo tubes. Her relatively lighter armour was initially offset by high speed, but by World War II newer battleships were at least as fast and considerably better protected.
During the war, HMS Hood operated in the North Atlantic, at Gibraltar and during Operation Catapult at Mers-el-Kébir. In May 1941 she was dispatched together with HMS Prince of Wales to intercept Bismarck and Prinz Eugen. During the Battle of the Denmark Strait on 24 May 1941, Hood was hit near her magazine and suffered a catastrophic explosion that caused the ship to sink within minutes. Only three of her 1,418 crew survived. The wreck was located in 2001 and is designated as a war grave.
