USS Yorktown was the lead ship of the Yorktown class. She was laid down in 1934, launched in April 1936 and commissioned in September 1937. At 246.7 metres long, 33.4 metres wide, with a full displacement of 25,500 tons and a maximum speed of approximately 32 to 33 knots, Yorktown was designed around speed and a large air group. Her main offensive power effectively came from the approximately 85 aircraft carried on board.
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, USS Yorktown was transferred to the Pacific and became the flagship of Task Force 17. In February 1942 she launched air attacks against Japanese positions in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands and in May fought in the Battle of the Coral Sea. She suffered severe damage there, but after an exceptionally rapid repair at Pearl Harbor she returned to action after only three days for the Battle of Midway. During that battle, Yorktown was hit by Japanese aircraft and later attacked again by a submarine. She eventually capsized and sank on 7 June 1942. Trumpeter recreates this famous carrier in an impressive 1:200 scale, making it an excellent choice for enthusiasts of U.S. naval history and WWII warship modelling.
