To accommodate this, the third gun position and the second torpedo launcher were removed and the rear superstructure was modified.

By late 1943, USS Stevens was converted back to her original Fletcher-class armament configuration. From 1943 to 1945, she served in the Western Pacific, supporting island landings, providing naval gunfire support, and conducting patrol missions. She was decommissioned in 1946 and ultimately scrapped in 1972.
