Introduced in 1941, the M3 Halftrack served as an armoured personnel carrier, troop transport, artillery tractor, ambulance, command vehicle and communications vehicle. The M3A1 was an improved development featuring, among other changes, a ring mount for the .50-calibre Browning machine gun. Vehicles from the M2-M3-M5 family were widely used in the Pacific, North Africa, Italy and Northwest Europe and remained active in several conflicts after 1945.
