The Fallschirmjäger were Germany's airborne forces and began to take shape in 1936, initially under the Luftwaffe. Under General Kurt Student, these units developed into the 7th Air Division, combining parachute infantry, glider-trained troops and infantry transported to the battlefield by aircraft. Between 1939 and 1941 they were employed in their intended airborne role. Following the severe losses suffered on Crete, Fallschirmjäger were increasingly used as elite infantry and earned the nickname Green Devils among the Allies.
Operation Mercury, the German assault on Crete from 20 May to 1 June 1941, was Germany's largest airborne operation of WWII. Approximately 22,000 to 24,000 German troops took part, supported by around 1,200 aircraft, against approximately 42,000 Allied troops commanded by General Bernard Freyberg. Despite heavy losses, German paratroopers secured Maleme and its airfield, allowing elements of the 5th Mountain Division and heavy equipment to be brought onto the island. Chania and Suda were subsequently captured. Victory came at a high price, with at least around 3,400 German dead, approximately 2,600 wounded and 370 aircraft destroyed or damaged.
