It provides an excellent foundation for creating a lively military scene centred on the Wiking Division and fighting on the Eastern Front.
The 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking was formed in mid-1940 around the SS-Standarte Germania regiment and was initially commanded by Felix Steiner. Alongside Germans, the division included volunteers from countries including Denmark, Estonia, Finland and Norway. It fought with Army Group South in Ukraine during Operation Barbarossa in 1941, reaching the Don and Mius rivers. Its later operations included Fall Blau and the advance towards Grozny, followed by its withdrawal from the Caucasus at the end of 1942. In 1943 the division fought at Kharkov, Kursk and during the subsequent Soviet counteroffensive. In 1944 it operated in Poland and fought the Red Army in the Warsaw region. Fighting in Hungary followed in early 1945 before the division eventually surrendered to the Allies in Austria.
The Waffen-SS developed from earlier SS formations and took on an increasingly significant combat role from 1940. It included both German and non-German volunteers and later conscripts, while the combat effectiveness of its divisions varied considerably. Several Waffen-SS formations were heavily equipped and played significant military roles on the Eastern Front and in France. At the same time, their history is inseparable from war crimes: soldiers of the Wiking Division committed numerous war crimes on the Eastern Front and participated in genocide against the Jewish population. Dragon 6519 gives you a detailed figure set representing this historically significant and deeply controversial formation, with fast delivery and excellent customer service from Most-Models.com.
