For the planned German invasion of Great Britain, Operation Sea Lion, a number of Panzer IIIs were converted into Tauchpanzer diving tanks. These vehicles were intended to drive completely submerged along the seabed using a special breathing system. The Panzer III was an important workhorse of the German armoured forces and was continuously developed throughout its production life. The first prototypes appeared in 1936 and approximately 5,800 vehicles were eventually produced. A total of 435 Ausf.F vehicles were manufactured between September 1939 and July 1940. The version prepared for Operation Sea Lion featured a turret-mounted 3.7cm KwK L/46.5 gun. Later Panzer III variants received more powerful 50mm guns, heavier armour and numerous other improvements. The final Ausf.N was equipped as a support tank with the short-barrelled 75mm KwK 37 L/24. The Panzer III chassis also provided the basis for vehicles such as the StuG III. The tank family served from Poland and France through Operation Barbarossa, Typhoon and Kursk to the later fighting against the Soviet Union and Western Allies.
