The Pz.Kpfw.VI Tiger emerged after German encounters with vehicles including the Soviet T-34 and KV-1 accelerated development of a new heavy tank. The VK 4501 (H) prototype underwent trials on 20 April 1942 in the presence of Adolf Hitler, after which the tank entered production as the Pz.Kpfw.VI Ausf.H1 and later Ausf.E. Production continued from 1942 to 1945, with modifications including Feifel air filters, changes to headlight placement, improved optical equipment and alterations to the commander’s cupola.

The Tiger was powered by a 700hp Maybach HL230 P45 twelve-cylinder engine and combined frontal armour up to 120mm with the powerful 88mm KwK 36 L/56 gun and three 7.92mm MG34 machine guns. Weighing approximately 56.9 tonnes, it could reach around 38km/h on the road with a road range of approximately 100km. Tigers fought in Tunisia, at Kursk, in Normandy and on the Eastern Front. Its strengths were balanced by time-consuming production, a complicated suspension and, later in the war, declining armour quality caused by shortages of molybdenum.
