Development of the Tiger accelerated following German encounters with the Soviet T-34 and KV-1. The VK 4501 (H) prototype underwent trials on 20 April 1942 in the presence of Adolf Hitler and entered production shortly afterwards as the Pz.Kpfw.VI Ausf.H1, later designated Ausf.E. From 1942 to 1945, the design was continuously modified with features including Feifel dust filters, altered headlight positions, improved optical equipment and changes to the commander’s cupola.

The Tiger I combined a 700hp Maybach HL230 P45 twelve-cylinder engine with frontal armour up to 120mm and the powerful 88mm KwK 36 L/56 gun, supplemented by three 7.92mm MG34 machine guns. Weighing 56.9 tonnes, it could reach approximately 38km/h on the road and had a road range of around 100km.
