This completely newly tooled plastic model kit is based on extensive research of the full-size vehicle and faithfully recreates the unusual design of the RSO/01. The RSO was developed during World War II as a German tracked tractor for difficult conditions, including deep snow and poor roads. A 3,517cc V8 gasoline engine producing 70hp and a four-speed transmission were mounted at the front. A propeller shaft transferred power to the rear differential and sprockets. The RSO was used for duties including artillery towing and transporting goods.

The first production version, the RSO/01, featured its distinctive rounded cabin made from pressed steel sheet. Production began in October 1942. From the spring of 1943, the cabin floor was raised by approximately 30mm to provide clearance for the 60cm-wide snow tracks used to improve mobility over difficult roads. Tamiya has faithfully recreated this post-spring 1943 version.

The model offers plenty of choice and mechanical detail. You can build the cargo bed with or without its canvas cover, leaving the canvas frame visible when uncovered. Wood patterns on the bed and fabric patterns on the canvas cover are authentically reproduced. The engine, drive shaft and differential gears are also finely depicted. The cabin front cover can be assembled with or without shutters, while the assembly-type tracks use one-piece straight sections. A driver figure and masking stickers for the clear window parts are also included.

Decals are provided for a vehicle from the 1st Skijäger Division on the Eastern Front in 1944 and a vehicle from an unknown unit in France in 1944. The finished model measures 126mm long and 64mm wide.
