1:35 Trumpeter 00377 T-62 Mod. 1972 – Soviet Main Battle Tank Plastic Model kit
The 1:35 Trumpeter 00377 T-62 Mod. 1972 is a strong plastic model kit of a Soviet main battle tank from the Cold War. This Static Armor model is ideal for modellers who want to build a recognisable Russian T-62 with a powerful historical background, distinctive lengthened hull and impressive 115 mm smoothbore gun. With its detail, metal barrel and two interesting paint schemes, this kit fits perfectly into a 1:35 military collection or realistic diorama.
The T-62 was originally conceived as a companion weapon to the T-55 and can be seen as a T-55 concept up-gunned with heavier armament. Both vehicles shared wheels, tracks, engine, transmission, hatches and other fittings, but the T-62 received a lengthened hull and a new turret design. The major innovation was the 115 mm 2A20 smoothbore gun, also referred to as the UT-5, which could fire BR-5 APFSDS rounds through approximately 300 mm of armour at 1000 metres. This made the T-62 suitable for dealing with threats such as the American M48 and later British Centurion models.
The first prototypes appeared in the late 1950s, the T-62 entered service in 1961 and was first shown to the public in 1965. During production, probably around 20,000 vehicles were built. The tank had a combat weight of 37 to 40 tons, was powered by a 580 hp W-55 engine and, besides the 115 mm gun, carried a 7.62 mm PKT machine gun and a 12.7 mm DShK machine gun. The T-62 was widely exported and used in conflicts such as Afghanistan, the Iran-Iraq War and the Gulf War.
