The C1 Ariete was developed as the successor to the Leopard 1 in Italian Army service. Compared with its predecessor, the C1 Ariete received more effective main armament, a more modern fire control system and improved armour made from steel and composite elements, similar in concept to modern tanks such as the M1 Abrams, Leopard 2 and Challenger II.

For service in Iraq, the Ariete C1 was fitted with an add-on armour package of approximately two tons, mounted to the hull sides as well as to the sides and front of the turret. This uparmored version was also armed with two MG 42/59 7.62 mm machine guns with protective shields in addition to the 120 mm main gun.
