With the 1:35 Trumpeter 01070 FAUN SLT 50-3 Elefant with SaAnh.52t semi-trailer, you can build an impressive German heavy tank transporter in a substantial scale. The origins of this transport system go back to the joint West German-US MBT-70 and HET-70 programmes of the 1960s. After both projects were cancelled in 1970 because of rising costs, Germany continued development independently. FAUN developed the tractor unit and Krupp the semi-trailer; the combination was tested from 1971 and entered service in 1976 as the SLT-50-2 Elefant. Production ended in 1979 after 324 transporters had been delivered to the Bundeswehr. Six were exported to Poland in 2002 together with Leopard 2A4 tanks, while the system was also exported to Bahrain and possibly Saudi Arabia. The later SLT-56 succeeded the SLT-50 from the late 1980s and was used for transporting Leopard 2 tanks, often together with older Elefant trailers.
