The BDRM-2, developed by Gorky Automobile Plant, was produced from 1964 to 1989 and built under license in Poland, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. The vehicle’s armor protects against small arms, while its excellent off-road capability makes it ideal for reconnaissance. Small additional wheels in the middle of the hull help overcome ditches and trenches, and a water-jet engine provides amphibious functionality. Armed with a heavy 14.5 mm KPVT machine gun in a rotating turret and a coaxial 7.62 mm PKT Kalashnikov machine gun, the BDRM-2 is effective against light armored vehicles and infantry. Numerous upgrades were introduced during its long production run, and more than 7,200 units were produced; many remain in use worldwide.
