USS Constellation was the second Kitty Hawk-class aircraft carrier, a modernised development of the Forrestal class. She was laid down in 1957, launched in October 1960 and commissioned in October 1961. At 332 metres long, 76 metres wide, with a displacement of approximately 88,000 tons and a maximum speed of around 32 to 33 knots, Constellation was an imposing conventionally powered aircraft carrier capable of carrying up to 85 to 90 aircraft.

Shortly after entering service, USS Constellation was assigned to the Pacific Fleet. She operated in the Gulf of Tonkin from 1964 and saw extensive service during the Vietnam War. Later deployments included missions involving Iran and Iraq. In 1975 Constellation was converted into a multi-purpose aircraft carrier, followed by an extensive SLEP modernisation programme beginning in 1990 to extend her service life. In March 2003 she participated in operations against Iraq before being decommissioned later that year. Scrapping was completed in 2017.
