The General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon is an American single-engine multirole fighter aircraft known worldwide for its speed, agility and advanced technology. Development of the aircraft began in 1971 by General Dynamics as part of the U.S. Air Force Light Weight Fighter competition. The YF-16 prototype made its first flight on February 2, 1974 and proved to be a revolutionary aircraft design.
One of the major technological breakthroughs of the F-16 was the use of a fully computerized fly-by-wire flight control system. This allowed the wings and tail surfaces to be smaller, reducing overall aircraft weight and greatly improving maneuverability. The F-16 was the first fighter jet in the world to implement such a system.
Early F-16 versions were largely constructed from aluminum alloys, while later variants increasingly used composite materials. Different versions of the F-16 are powered by powerful engines such as the Pratt & Whitney F100 series and the General Electric F110. The aircraft was equipped with advanced radar systems such as the APG-66 and later the APG-68.
The F-16 proved highly effective in numerous military operations, including air combat during the 1982 Lebanon War and Operation Desert Storm in 1991. By the end of the twentieth century more than 4,000 of these successful aircraft had been produced, making the F-16 one of the most successful fighter jets ever built.
This Hasegawa model kit represents the F-16CM-50 from the U.S. Air Force 35th Fighter Wing Pacific Air Forces F-16 Demonstration Team based at Misawa Air Base.
