Description

A powerful radial engine, streamlined fuselage and distinctive prototype features: the Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate was among the most advanced Japanese fighter aircraft of the Second World War. With the Hasegawa 07567 Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate Frank Prototype, you can recreate a special early version of this famous aircraft as a plastic model kit in 1:48 scale. This particular release focuses on the additional prototypes built to test and refine the design before full-scale production began. With its distinctive wing configuration, powerful appearance and specialised prototype components, this Hayate makes a fascinating addition to any collection of historical Japanese combat aircraft.

The Nakajima Ki-84, known to the Allies by the reporting name Frank and in Japan as Hayate, meaning 'gale', was developed as a successor to earlier Japanese Army fighters. The first prototype flew in April 1943 and impressed with its combination of high speed, excellent manoeuvrability and powerful armament. Powered by a Nakajima Ha-45 Homare radial engine, the aircraft was designed to engage both enemy fighters and heavy bombers. During its development, several additional prototypes were constructed to improve flight characteristics, engineering and operational capabilities. The Ki-84 eventually became one of the most important Japanese Army fighters during the final stages of the Second World War.

Hasegawa has equipped this distinctive prototype version with specialised components that differ from later standard production aircraft. The model includes a larger rudder and parts representing the characteristic collector exhaust system, allowing the features of the early Hayate to be accurately reproduced. The kit comprises 106 parts and offers two historical decal options. The first represents prototype number 24 of the Japanese Army aviation testing department, based at Fussa Airfield. The second depicts prototype number 62 of the 22nd Sentai, flown by Warrant Officer Susumu Kuga in April 1944. These distinctive markings allow you to recreate a lesser-known stage in the development of the Ki-84. Display the completed model as a standalone piece or incorporate it into a diorama depicting a Japanese military test airfield.
