The MH-60L DAP was designed to escort transport helicopters, provide direct fire support, engage armoured vehicles and suppress enemy air defences. It could perform these missions in all weather conditions, both day and night. Its main weapons included laser-guided AGM-114 Hellfire missiles and the 30 mm M230 Chain Gun. The Hellfires were used against armoured targets, while the M230, with a rate of fire of up to 625 rounds per minute, was effective against light armoured vehicles, trucks and infantry.

An FLIR turret with a laser rangefinder and designator was mounted beneath the nose for weapon targeting.
