The US-1 and US-1A were developed as STOL aircraft for search-and-rescue missions and, thanks to their amphibious design, could operate from both land and water.

The US-1A built an impressive operational record. Between 1976 and 1999, the type saved 550 lives during more than 500 rescue missions. Shin Meiwa produced only six US-1s and fourteen US-1As for the JMSDF, making this aircraft an unusual subject for enthusiasts of Japanese military aviation and rescue aircraft.
