The original McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle first flew on 27 July 1972 and emerged from experience gained during air combat over Vietnam as well as the need to counter aircraft including the Soviet MiG-23 and MiG-25. McDonnell Douglas won the FX programme in 1969 and developed a successor to the F-4 Phantom that combined outstanding performance with an emphasis on easier servicing. Powerful Pratt & Whitney F100 engines and advanced avionics helped establish the Eagle’s formidable reputation. The original A and B models were followed in 1979 by the improved single-seat F-15C and two-seat F-15D. Later developments included the F-15E Strike Eagle for both air-to-air and ground-attack missions. The F-15J was developed for Japan and produced there under licence. F-15 aircraft were also supplied to countries including Israel, Saudi Arabia and South Korea and saw operational service during conflicts including Desert Storm and the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
