Description

With the 1:72 IBG Models 72576 Gotha Go 242B-2, you can build a distinctive German transport glider from the Second World War. The Go 242 was developed as a cheaper and simpler alternative to conventional transport aircraft, giving the Luftwaffe a practical way to move troops and supplies into hard-to-reach areas. Its twin-boom tail and wide fuselage also give it a highly recognisable appearance.

Development began after the RLM identified the need for a heavier transport glider to complement the lighter DFS 230. Gothaer Waggonfabrik received a contract in 1941 to design an aircraft capable of carrying 20 fully equipped soldiers or an equivalent cargo load. Chief designer A. Kalkert chose a high-wing layout with twin tail booms and a broad fuselage, while the entire rear section could be opened to simplify loading.

The design proved successful and, according to the supplied information, even offered better flight characteristics than the lighter DFS 230. The Go 242 appeared in several versions, with changes focused mainly on improving lift and ground handling. From the outset, the airframe was also designed so that engines could be added, eventually leading to the powered Go 244. The distinctive Gotha silhouette became a familiar sight on supply missions in the Mediterranean, the Balkans and especially on the Eastern Front.
