With the 1:72 IBG Models 72580 Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I Early - The Beginning of the Saga, you can build the opening chapter of one of the most famous fighter stories in aviation history. The early Spitfire Mk.I, together with the Mk.II, formed the backbone of RAF Fighter Command during the critical early years of the war and became a symbol of British air power and resistance.

The Spitfire Mk.I became fully operational from 1938-1939 and was already widely distributed among frontline squadrons by the time of the German invasion of France. Early aircraft were powered by Rolls-Royce Merlin II and III engines and armed with eight .303 Browning machine guns. Thanks to its speed, climb performance, responsive controls, tight turning radius and excellent visibility, the Spitfire quickly gained a formidable reputation among both RAF pilots and their German opponents.

During the Battle of Britain in 1940, the Mk.I was heavily involved in combat against German Bf 109 fighters and bombers over southern England. While Hurricanes often concentrated on the bombers, Spitfires were frequently tasked with engaging enemy fighters. This early Mk.I therefore represents the true beginning of the Spitfire saga that would later extend across North Africa, Italy, Normandy, Germany and the Far East.
