Description

With the 1:72 IBG Models 72910 Douglas C-47A Skytrain Polish Dakota Limited Edition, you can build one of the most important transport aircraft of the Second World War in a distinctive Polish version. The C-47 Skytrain, also known as the Dakota, was the military development of the highly successful Douglas DC-3 and became an indispensable transport aircraft. This Limited Edition is an appealing choice if you are interested in Polish aviation history, Allied transport aircraft and historic 1:72 scale aircraft modelling.

During World War II, the C-47 served on virtually every front, transporting troops and cargo, carrying paratroopers, towing gliders and evacuating wounded personnel. Polish airmen in exile serving under the Royal Air Force also operated the C-47A extensively, including within No. 216 and 301 (Special Duties) Squadron RAF. After the war, several aircraft remained in Polish hands and continued to perform transport and liaison duties.

The C-47A featured improvements including a reinforced cabin and a 24V electrical system. Power came from two Pratt & Whitney R-1830-92 engines producing 1,200 hp each. The C-47 prototype made its test flight on 23 December 1941, with series production beginning in January 1942. More than 10,000 aircraft were produced before production ended in 1945. C-47s were also supplied to the Soviet Union under Lend-Lease, while more than 6,000 aircraft were license-built between 1939 and 1952 as the Li-2. After 1945, many aircraft entered civilian service, helping the design become one of the world's most popular passenger and transport aircraft.
