The first prototypes appeared in 1945-1946, followed by Soviet series production from 1946 until 1958. Approximately 35,000 vehicles were produced in the USSR alone. With a combat weight of up to 36 tons, the T-54 was powered by a 520 hp W-54 engine. Its main armament consisted of a 100 mm D-10T wz.1944 tank gun, supplemented by two 7.62 mm SGMT machine guns and a 12.7 mm DSzK machine gun.

Several versions appeared during mass production, including the T-54 mod. 1946 with a turret shape resembling that of the T-44, the mod. 1949 with a revised turret and the T-54A with a single-plane gun stabiliser and night-vision equipment for the driver. The T-54 was also produced under licence in countries including Czechoslovakia and Poland and developed into a vehicle that can be regarded as an early Main Battle Tank.
