Description

Experience an impressive piece of maritime history with the 1:350 Hasegawa 40073 IJN Nagato Battle of Leyte Gulf WWII. With this highly detailed plastic model kit you build one of the most famous battleships of the Imperial Japanese Navy, exactly as it appeared during the historic Battle of Leyte Gulf in 1944. For enthusiasts of WWII warships, naval model building and maritime dioramas, this is a true centerpiece for any collection.

The IJN Nagato was laid down in 1917, launched in November 1919 and commissioned in November 1920. With a length of 221 meters, a beam of 34 meters and a full displacement of approximately 42,800 tons, this battleship was a formidable force at sea. The Nagato was also the first warship in the world to be equipped with 16-inch main guns. This immense firepower was combined with a speed of approximately 25 to 26 knots, which was exceptional for a battleship of its time.

As the lead ship of the Nagato-class, it marked an important step in battleship development, as its main armament exceeded the 400 mm caliber. Its weaponry consisted of eight 410 mm guns in four turrets and a secondary armament of twenty 140 mm guns. During a major modernization in 1936, the ship was expanded, its machinery updated, catapults for reconnaissance seaplanes were added, and its anti-aircraft defenses were significantly strengthened.

At the outbreak of World War II, Nagato served as the flagship of the Japanese fleet. From this ship the famous command “Niitakayama nobore 1208” was issued, initiating the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Later, the ship supported operations at Midway, the Marianas campaign, and actively fought during the Battle of Leyte Gulf in 1944. There, it helped sink the escort carrier USS Gambier Bay and three destroyers. Ultimately, Nagato was the only Japanese battleship to survive the Pacific War. In 1946, it was used for nuclear testing at Bikini Atoll and eventually sank after the second explosion on July 25, 1946.

This Special Edition model kit from Hasegawa depicts the Nagato as it appeared during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. With approximately 850 parts, you can build one of the most detailed 1:350 scale battleship models available. The hull includes internal bulkheads for added strength, the iconic pagoda mast is accurately reproduced, and the three Type 95 reconnaissance seaplanes are finely detailed. The kit also includes newly developed plastic parts and photo-etched metal components for an even more realistic result.
