Description

Experience the history of the Pacific War with the 1:700 Hasegawa 44707 USS Essex CV-9 from the famous Water Line Series. This detailed plastic model kit allows you to build one of the most important American aircraft carriers of World War II. For enthusiasts of naval history, warships and WWII model building, this is an impressive addition to any collection.

USS Essex (CV-9) was the first aircraft carrier of the famous Essex class, a series that played a crucial role in the United States Navy during the Pacific War from 1943 to 1945. The ship was laid down in 1941, launched in July 1942 and commissioned in December 1942. With a length of approximately 250 meters, a beam of 33 meters and a full displacement of around 36,400 tons, Essex was a powerful warship capable of reaching speeds up to 33 knots.

The Essex class formed the backbone of the American aircraft carrier fleet during the war. A total of 24 carriers of this class entered service before Japan’s surrender in September 1945. Their design was based on the experience gained from the Lexington and Yorktown classes but without tonnage limitations. As a result, emphasis was placed on aircraft capacity and high speed. An interesting design feature was that the hangar was not an integral part of the hull but suspended beneath the flight deck, making these ships relatively vulnerable to damage but much harder to sink from air attack.

During World War II, USS Essex participated in major operations across the Pacific. The carrier took part in combat operations around Marcus Island and Wake Island and later in operations around the Gilbert Islands. In 1944 the ship supported American landings on the Marshall Islands and actively participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. In 1945 aircraft from Essex supported operations around Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

After the war USS Essex underwent a major modernization between 1947 and 1951 to operate jet aircraft. The carrier later served during the Korean War and participated in the naval blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. The ship was finally decommissioned in 1969 and scrapped in 1975.

With this Hasegawa model kit from the 1:700 Water Line Series you can build an accurate replica of this historic aircraft carrier. The model measures approximately 38 cm in length and features well-molded parts specific to USS Essex. The kit also includes a full complement of aircraft including Hellcats, Corsairs, Avengers and Helldivers to display on the flight deck.
