Description

With the 1:72 IBG Models 72592 Supermarine Spitfire Mk.V Trop., you can build a British fighter that played an important role over North Africa during 1942 and 1943. The Spitfire had already become an icon of the RAF, but desert operations demanded specific modifications. The Mk.V Trop. received the distinctive Vokes dust filter beneath the nose, an enlarged oil tank, revised oil cooler and radiator installation and additional equipment to improve reliability in harsh desert conditions.

The arrival of German Bf 109F units in North Africa increased the pressure on the RAF in 1941. In response, units including No. 92 and No. 145 Squadrons were sent to Egypt. The first tropicalised Spitfires reached Egypt via Takoradi in Ghana and entered combat on 1 June 1942. By the Second Battle of El Alamein, the Western Desert Air Force was operating three Spitfire squadrons, and the type continued to support the Allied advance through Libya into Tunisia. There, the Spitfire helped shift the balance of air power increasingly in favour of the Allies.
