The Spitfire Mk.V entered service from 1941 as the RAF’s response to the Messerschmitt Bf 109F and became increasingly important in North Africa. Tropical modifications included the Vokes filter, an enlarged oil tank, revised oil cooler and radiator installation and additional desert equipment. From 1942 onward, these aircraft operated over Egypt and later across Libya and Tunisia, contributing significantly to growing Allied air superiority.
