Weighing approximately 124 tonnes, with its gigantic mortar and extraordinary construction, the Karl-Gerät was an imposing but highly complex weapon system. Development began in 1936 and the first example entered Wehrmacht service in 1940. In addition to a prototype, six production vehicles were built with the names Baldur, Wotan, Thor, Odin, Loki and Ziu, with the production vehicles delivered between November 1940 and August 1941. A total of seven constructed Karl-Gerät vehicles is stated. The weapon saw only limited operational use, including during the siege of Sevastopol in 1942 and the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944.

Its enormous dimensions created major logistical challenges. Transportation and operation required equipment including a crane, a two-piece heavy railway transport system and modified tanks for carrying ammunition. Before firing, the mortar had to be lowered onto the ground to relieve the suspension, while loading was also a lengthy process. The 600mm projectile weighed approximately 2.17 tonnes and had a range of around 6,800 metres, while the 540mm projectile weighed approximately 1.25 tonnes and could reach around 10,400 metres. The enormous effort required to operate the weapon meant that an attack by approximately five to six Ju 87s could achieve comparable effects.
