– The self-propelled version of the 60 cm siege mortar was ordered in June 1937 and the name Karl came from the involvement of General Karl Becker
– Driving trials were held at Unterlüss in May 1940 and the six production vehicles were delivered from November 1940 to August 1941
– In May 1942, 54 cm barrels were ordered for the six vehicles to increase the weapon’s range

– Guns I to IV went to the Russian Front in July 1941 with the 628th schwere Artillerie Abteilung and saw action at various sites including Lemburg
– The best-known action was against Sevastopol in 1942, and four guns were later issued to the 833rd schwere Artillerie Abteilung mot
– The guns carried names such as Adam, Eve, Thor, Odin, Loki and Ziu, with markings for Nr. I Adam 040/041 and Nr. II Eva 040 in overall panzer grey from 1941
– Karl mortars were also historically associated with the siege of Sevastopol in 1942 and the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944
– The original system was extremely large, weighed around 124 tons and had to be lowered to the ground before firing to relieve the suspension
– Range was approximately 6800 m with the 60 cm round and approximately 10,400 m with the 54 cm round
– Model consists of 1361 parts with 30 sprues, lower hull, upper hull, 2 tracks and 8 railway sections
